Dewoitine D.338

Company SABENA had ordered with the SAF (French Aeronautical Company, before Aeronautical Constructions E. Dewoitine), in December 1933, an apparatus D.335B. However the destruction of D.332 led to its replacement by D.338 meeting new standards of calculation. In spite of the cancellation of the Belgian market in March 1935, the manufacture of D.338 n° 01 was continued on ordering of Air France. Equipped with three engines Hispano-Suiza 9Vd of 650 CH and a retractable train, this prototype accomplished its first flight on August 9, 1935 with Marcel Doret. Following its tests, the apparatus, registered F-AOZA and baptized Clemence-Isaure, was brought into service by Air France on June 29, 1936, on Lyon and Marseilles. It briefly took again service in Syria during the program of 1941. It was destroyed in a hangar of Toulouse, at the time of a raid of the RAF, in the night of April 4, 1944. Not less than thirty specimens of series were produced between 1937 and 1939. Largely used on the Far East and along the African Western coast, they were equipped with twelve to twenty-two seats, or six berths. Eight D.338 survivors of the war were given in service, after this one, on Nice, Ajaccio and Algiers.

Fuselage: steel construction of rectangular section; four principal members; auxiliary member and duralumin couples.

Empennage: traditional steel construction; elevator supported.

Landing gear: train principal completely retractable step; ducted nonretractable part aerodynamically after the retraction.
