E.28/39, W4041, First British Jet powered aircraft.

One of two E.28/39 built. The other was W4046

First fight was May 15 1941. The aircraft was used to test various jet engines. This photo was taken at Farnborough, January 1945. The end-plate fins were added in April 1944. In this photo it is powered by a 1760 lbs W.2/200 Power Jet engine.

The other E.28/39 was destroyed in a high altitude test flight on July 30, 1943 when the ailerons jammed at 37,000 ft. Pilot Douglas Davie became the first pilot to bale out of a jet when he exited at 33,000 feet.

W4041 is now on display at the London Science Museum.
