1945 Grumman F8F-1 Bearcat BuNo 90437

First production F8F-1

At the time of this photo it was set up to do a test flight to study an unexplained flow on top of the wing. There was a spanwise flow which occurred during max dive speed. This disturbance was determined to be due to the engine exhaust pipes being too close to the top of the wing. The problem was fixed by moving the exhaust pipes four more inches above the wing.

Note the different look of the prop hub. There is a 25 lbs steel weight attached to the front of the prop hub. This was done to move the CG to the forward limit for these test flights.
