1916 Siemens-Schuckert D.I

Powered by a 110 hp Siemens-Halske Sh-1, 9 cylinder geared rotary engine. Also refered to as a differential rotary. The propeller is attached to the crankcase as with other rotary engines but the crankshaft is geared to rotate in the opposite direction at the same rpm. For example, if the propeller and crankcase are rotating at 900 rpm in one direction, the crankshaft will be rotating in the opposite direction at 900 rpm. This produces an effective engine rpm of 1800. This allows the use of a larger diameter propeller operating at a lower rpm thus producing more thrust per hp.
