In 1947 the Jacobs L5 was removed and replaced with a L4MB converting the aircraft model from C17B to C17L.
The last private owner of this aircraft was Desert Air Parts of Tucson AZ. They traded it to the Smithsonian Institute for a Douglas C-118A, (aka DC-6), serial number 53-3292. The DC-6 ended up with Northern Air Cargo of Anchorage AK registered as N313RS. This DC-6 was involved in a fatal crash on July 20, 1996 at Russian Mission, AK.
