1954 Model 65ATV "Air Test Vehicle" N1105V
One of two built. The second was destroyed by an engine fire on the ground.
Built from Cessna 170 wings and a Schweizer 1-23 fuselage. Two different landing gears were used, the gears in his photo which look like Cessna gears and skid gears from a Bell 47. When I saw it at the NASM's Garber Facility in 1978, it had the Bell 47 undercarriage.
Powered by two 1000 lbs Fairchild J44 turbojets, rotatable 90° and one Turbomèca Palouste turbo-generator for compressed air to the attitude controls.
Hovering and conventional flights were made in 1954 and 1958. No transitions flights were made.
