On May 23, 1997, This Gee Bee crashed a few miles short of the runway while approaching Watsonville airport for an air show. The pilot was able to walk away from the crash. I was told that it developed a oil leak and the engine quit on approach. Here is a photo the Gee Bee after the crash. Looks like it had large quantity of oil on the underside.
