In the midst of the 1920 recession, Alfred Lawson made a decision to attempt to fly the new L-4 from a field near his factory rather than make a costly ground transport move to Hamilton Field. On May 8 1921, the L-4's only attempt at flight ended at a tree at the end of a 300 ft strip.
