Was to be used by George Hutchinson in an attempt to break Lindbergh's New York to Paris record. Hutchinson lost control on first takeoff, went off the runway, hit a Bellanca and two parked cars and seriously injured a woman. One of the cars was Hutchinson's rental.
In 1931 it was sold to Hollywood's Douglas Fairbanks and Victor Fleming.
In 1934 it was sold back to Lockheed and converted to a Altair 8D. Then sold to Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith. It set speed record in Australia registered as VH-USB.
A flight was made from Brisbane to Oakland CA via Fiji and Hawaii. Then on to New York and shipped to England for the Mac Robertson race. Registered as G-ADUS it disappeared over the Bay of Bengal and was never seen. A tire with part of the landing gear was found off Burma two years later.
