Modified as the XP-80B with a thinner wing.
Then modified for record flight with a 4,600 lbs Allison 400 which is a J33 with water-methanol injection. Designated as XP-80R after this modification. It set a world record of 623.738 mph at Muroc Dry Lake, CA on June 19, 1947.
