In 1938 the Navy ordered a single prototype Martin Model 170 as an experimental patrol bomber, XPB2M-1.

Navy redesignated this one and only XPB2M-1 Mars as a transport, XPB2M-1R.

The name "Mars" would be used again in 1945 for a similar aircraft, Martin Model 170A, the JRM-1
