This is the second prototype which first flew in January 1957. The frist prototype, which flew first in September 1955, did not have a ramjet.
Powered by a 7,715 lbf SNECMA Atar E 101 E3 turbojet plus an annular ramjet behind the turbojet producing 15,250 lbf.
The ramjet was fed by bypass air flowing around the turbojet. The ramjet could only be ran for a few minute. The fuel flow rate to the ramjet was as high as 8,800 gal/hr. The maximum Mach number was limited to just over 2 due aerodynamic heating of the aluminum airframe. The climb rate with the ramjet on was 28,000 ft/min. On Oct 13, 1959 it achieved Mach 2.19 (1,448 mph) at 50,000 ft.
