This P-51 had a catastrophic in flight failure during the 1999 Reno air races. As it started its turn on the pylon in front of the grand stands, It seem to start a shallow climb. When it was about a third the way around the turn, the tail came off, the aircraft pitched downward and the wings came off in a negative g load. This all happened so fast it look like the aircraft had exploded. Someone said the engine with its counter-rotating props flew like a helicopter for a ways.

This P-51 had been modified with wings and tail off of a Lear Jet.
