Ed purchased this Piper J3 in 1949 or 1950 for about $400. He obtained a pair of Edo 1020 for $100. It was kept it on the Mississippi River.
An instructor, Sonny Steveson, flipped it over in Lake Ferguson in 1950 or 1951. It was towed to the shore upside down. Ed cut some holes in the fabric before they flipped it upright to drain the water. The fuel tank and engine oil also had to be drained. The mags were removed from the engine and dried in an oven. Sonny Steveson was killed a few years later when he flew his duster in his own radio pole somewhere close to Greenville.
Ed sold this seaplane a few weeks before we moved to Florida in 1953.
