In 1943, the first low wing product from the Piper stable appeared, the PT-1 Primary Trainer s/n 1 registration NX4300. This was also known as the Cub PT and first flew on the 14th of March. It was a fabric covered tandem 2 seater with metal tube fuselage and wooden spar wings with flaps. It also had a retractable main gear undercarriage. Power was supplied by a 130 hp Franklin 6AC-298-D3 engine. This was developed for the advanced low-cost trainer contract with the U.S. Army Air Corps. The contract was not awarded due to the War ending. This aircraft was still registered in 1996 and is the only known survivor of the miscellaneous war-time prototypes.
