The hills between Livermore and the central valley of California have stopped a number of aircraft in the 30 years I have lived in Livermore. This PT-19 almost made it one foggy day. The Altamont Pass is 1000 feet; I think they hit about 50 feet below the top of the pass. Amazingly, both walked away from the crash. At one time I could see the wreck of two aircraft from the front door of my home.
A Canadian registered Mooney tried to run under the low fog from the central valley into Livermore at night and hit a new power line. It went down very close to interstate 580, killing 2 or 3 people.
